4 TH WORLD RECREATIONAL FISHING CONFERENCE

FIRST CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Deadline: January 15. 2005.

We welcome suggestions for oral and poster presentations, as well as suggestions for films, videos, and roundtable discussions from a truly multidisciplinary audience on the themes listed below. People and institutions wanting to take responsibility for chairing and organizing sessions are asked to express their interest before December 1. 2004.

The conference title is “Fishing is life – building partnership across boundaries” 
The following possible subthemes have been identified:

Trends in recreational fishing across the world:
•  Trends and changes in recreational fisheries and angling tourism across continents and countries: observations and findings from business, science and NGOs
•  How to attract and recruit young generations, women and new user groups to angling
•  The angling business sector: tackle and travel, trends and possibilities
•  Status, trends and challenges in competitive fishing;

Resource management challenges:
•  Sport, commercial and subsistence fishing: allocation decision making in the face of scarcity
•  Worldwide decline in major fish stocks – how it affects recreational fisheries
•  Management and cultivation strategies: can we learn across species and continents?
•  International fisheries management and highly migratory species (marine, anadromous and diadromous fishes)
•  Recreation fishing as a source of overfishing
•  Aquatic protected areas: panacea or new management tool?
•  Catch and release;

Development challenges:
•  Angling tourism and rural development
•  Ways to finance recreational fisheries management and enhancement – private or public responsibility?
•  The role of fishing tourism in developing countries and among indigenous people
•  Building partnerships between science, business, management and NGOs
•  Public opinions against recreational fishing – what is it and how to address it?

NOTIFICATION
Submitted abstracts will be subject to a brief consideration from the International Advisory Board. The conference will try to avoid too many parallel sessions with too few attending people. Therefore, some of the suggested abstracts might be rejected or suggested for a poster presentation.
Participants will be notified as soon as possible, and at latest before 1. March 2005, whether or not their presentation has been accepted. People already registered for the conference will eventually have their registration fee refunded if their abstract is rejected and they do not wish to participate.

ABSTRACT FORMAT
The conference language is English. Abstracts should be in a MS Word or compatible format and contain the following elements:
- Title
- Presenter
- Author(s), affiliation and contact info (please include email address!)
- Indicate subtheme relevant to the abstract
- Indicate preferred presentation: poster, oral, or video/film
- Short summary of max. 250 words.

Oral presentations will be allocated 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes for questions and comments. Standard poster display size is 75x100 cm.
